Delhiites dodge rear seat belt challans with bizarre excuses

This week, as the Delhi Traffic Police issued challans to passengers for not wearing rear seat belts – the action came as a surprise to most commuters. While some were shocked that such a rule exists, others finally discovered that the cars they were travelling in actually had a rear seat belt this whole time. Still, most were quick on their feet when coming up with excuses. From ‘hospital se aa rahe hain’ to ‘gaadi bas abhi showroom se nikli hai’ – the traffic police heard it all. At the same time, some were even seen trying to convince the policemen as to why they were safe without a rear seat belt!
COMMUTERS COME UP WITH BANAL EXCUSES
Recently, at GK II, when traffic police officials asked backseat occupants why they weren’t wearing a seat belt, the passengers responded by bombarding them with their own set of questions, like, ‘what is the point of wearing a seat belt in the backseat?’, ‘but my driver is wearing the seat belt, why do I have to wear one too?’, ‘when was the notification issued to challan commuters over rear seat belts?’, ‘can you show us the notification?’ and so forth. Many who were in cabs got furious, and accused their driver of ‘hiding’ the seat belt, and asked them to pay the fine instead. Near Savitri Cinema, when stopped for not wearing rear seat belts, a passenger pleaded, “We just bought the car.” As the car, straight out of the showroom, was still decorated with ribbons and was without a number plate too, the policemen relented. Similarly, another family, who said they were returning from the hospital, were not challaned either. “Insaaniyat ki khatir jane de rahe hain,” said the traffic policeman.
Brijpal Singh, ASI, Delhi Traffic Police, said, “Jaise hi pata chalta hai challan ho raha ha, log aise bargain karne lagte hain.”
SURPRISE, SURPRISE! EVEN YOUR CAR HAS A REAR SEAT BELT
While stopping a cab in which a couple wasn’t wearing the rear seat belts, Mukesh, the Traffic Inspector on duty, asked them, “Aap ko pata hai rear seatbelt mandatory ho chuka hai, uske baad bhi aap rearseat belt ka use nahi kar rahe ho?” The couple then proceeded to give the inspector a demo of how it was impossible to take the belt out, because it was hidden under the seat cover. In fact, several passengers similarly complained that it was the cabbies’ fault the rear seat belt was not visible.
In another case – even after her driver signalled her not to – a backseat occupant in complained, “My car company has not given us a seat belt in the back. Lagaye kaise?” The policemen then showed her the rear seatbelt, that had been there in her car all along.

GURGAON POLICE CONDUCTS REAR SEAT BELT AWARENESS DRIVE
Gurugram Police kicked off a rear seat belt awareness drive this week, Sanjay Kumar, Traffic Inspector, Gurgaon told us. Here too, when stopped, many passengers said they were not wearing a seat belt in the back because “it is safer than the front”. A backseat occupant
mentioned that she has “fragile bones” hence she couldn’t wear a seat belt. Another reasoned as to what’s the point of sitting in the backseat if she had to wear a seat belt there, too? Another complained to us, “I don’t drive when I’m going for a social gathering because I don’t want the seat belt crushing my clothes.” A commuter joked, “Itne traffic mein gaadi to chal nahi paati, crash kaise hoga?” Police officials then explained that wearing a seatbelt is as important in the city as on the highway.
