Jolt to Isro as ‘moneyspinner’ SSLV fails in maiden voyage

NEW DELHI: The failure of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV-D1) to place two satellites in their desired orbit during its maiden voyage on Sunday morning has given a jolt to Isro as the mini-PSLV was being promoted as a “launcher on demand” and a “moneyspinner” as it was supposed to carve a niche for itself in the $4.08 billion small commercial satellite market.
Though the lift-off and different stages of the Rs 56-crore SSLV “performed normally”, the new rocket placed the two satellites in wrong orbits. “The 356 km circular orbit was our intended orbit but it could place the satellite in an orbit of 356 /76 km,” Isro chairman S Somanath said. “As the 76-km elliptical orbit was the lowermost point and closer to the surface of the Earth, the satellites placed in such an orbit will not stay for longtime due to the atmosphere and will come down. The (two satellites) have already come down from that orbit and are no longer usable,” he said.
However, Isro promised that it “will come back soon with the second demonstration test of SSLV-D2”.
Isro considered the SSLV a “gamechanger” as it can be assembled in the quickest possible time on a customer’s demand. Its commercial arm, NewSpace India, was planning to transfer the rocket technology to the private sector for mass production. Currently, there are not many mini-launchers available in the global market and big rockets like Space X’s Falcon 9 and Isro’s PSLV are launching micro and small satellites piggybacking on the main payloads. The SSLV was supposed to fill that gap. However, it will now take a series of successful missions before foreign customers trust India’s new mini-launcher.
An SSLV is two-metre in diameter and 34m in length with a lift-off weight of just 120 tonnes as compared to a PSLV’s 320 tonne weight. It is meant to launch nano, micro & small satellites and a satellite up to 500kg in the 500km planar orbit. About 7,000 small satellites are expected to be launched between 2018 and 2027 with a total value of $38 billion, Niti Aayog member V K Saraswat had recently said in a space event.
The two satellites that were placed in wrong orbits were Earth Observation Satellite-02, an experimental optical imaging satellite with high spatial resolution, and co-passenger ‘AzaadiSAT’, developed by the student team of ‘Space Kidz India’, an aerospace organisation. The ‘AzaadiSAT’ comprises 75 payloads built by 750 school students to mark the 75th anniversary of Independence. Girl students from rural regions across the country were provided guidance to build these payloads.
