Minister vows action against those responsible for Gymkhana fiasco

HYDERABAD: Sports minister V Srinivas Goud said strict action will be taken against those responsible for the stampede and lathi-charge at the Gymkhana during the sale of tickets for the India vs Australia third T20I to be held at the RGIC Stadium in Uppal on Sunday.
The minister held a review meeting with the HCA officials at his chamber in the afternoon. HCA president Mohammad Azharuddin and secretary R Vijayanand, Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat, principal secretary (sports) Sandeep Kumar Sultania and other officials attended the meeting.
“Today’s incident during the sale of tickets is because of the negligence of the HCA officials. Principal secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania and Rachakonda commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat will inquire into the incident and take proper action against those responsible for the fiasco,” Goud said after the meeting.
“Thousands of youngsters came from different parts of the state to procure a ticket for the match. But, unfortunately, there was a minor incident at the Gymkhana today. We will provide all necessary medical help to the victims of the stampede,” he added.
Goud said there is a move to defame Hyderabad and Telangana state by some vested interests. “We will take action against those who try to sell tickets in the black market,” he warned and added, “We will ensure that the match is conducted in a grand manner and see that we get more international matches to the city.”
The minister also said, “We will also make sure that such mistakes do not occur in the future.”
Earlier in the day, the sports minister was supposed to visit the Uppal stadium and review the arrangements being made for the T20I match. But at the 11th hour, it was told that he would instead visit the Gymkhana ground where the sale of tickets was on and see if things were being done properly. However, he failed to turn up at the Gymkhana too.
It could be because by that time there was a stampede and a lathi-charge at the ground and the atmosphere was highly volatile with a lot of rumors doing the rounds. It was initially said that a woman had died in the stampede and more than a dozen people were injured. But all this proved to be false as only seven suffered minor injuries and the situation was quickly brought under control.
