Of 2.6 lakh who cleared JEE (Main), just 1.6 lakh register for advanced

MUMBAI: Of the 2.6 lakh candidates who cleared the JEE (Main) exam this year, just about 1.6 lakh have registered for the advanced exam, recording a dropout rate of 38.5%.

The entrance test for admission into the 23 IITs, which is to be held on Sunday, August 28, will also be taken by 50 foreigners, including OCIs and PIOs who have to travel to India to take JEE (Advanced). For the fourth time, JEE (Advanced) will be entirely computer-based.

This year, IIT Bombay will conduct JEE (Advanced) in over 600 exam centres in 226 cities. The last date for submission of fees is August 12. After this, the admit cards will be issued from August 23. The exam will be held in two shifts: 9am to 12 noon and from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

Last year, of the 2.6 lakh candidates who cleared the JEE (Main) exam, 1.5 lakh registered for the Advanced exam, and a year before that, of the 2.5 lakh candidates who cleared JEE (Main), 1.6 lakh registered for JEE (Advanced). This will be the third year when the exam will not be held outside India, but candidates will travel to the country to take the competitive test.

The total seats have increased to 16,232 in 23 IITs from 13,000 in 2019. There are 1,583 female supernumerary seats. This year too, the IITs have decided to give relaxation to Class 12 candidates as per the decision taken by the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

The JAB of JEE (Advanced), in the first meeting held on December 14, 2021, deliberated on the numerous representations received regarding the eligibility criteria and was of the view that the exceptional circumstances and hardships faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic required some relaxation to be given. These relaxations are special one-time measures only,” said the IITs in their press note.

Accordingly, candidates who appeared in Class 12 examination for the first time in 2020 or 2021 and successfully registered for JEE (Advanced) 2021 but were absent in both the papers of JEE (Advanced) 2021, are eligible to directly appear for JEE (Advanced) 2022.

Second, as a “one-time special measure” due to the ongoing pandemic, candidates who appeared in the Class 12 examination in 2020 for the first time are also eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced) 2022 provided they satisfy the following two criteria simultaneously—the candidate should have appeared once for JEE (Advanced), either in the year 2020 or 2021; or, have not at all appeared in any paper in both JEE (Advanced) 2020 and JEE (Advanced) 2021. And, these candidate(s) should appear in JEE (Main) 2022 and meet the cut-off score of the top 2,50,000 successful candidates for qualifying for JEE (Advanced) 2022 in their respective category.

Due to Covid-19, concession in board eligibility was being given for the last two years. Earlier in 2019, only 75 percentile in the 12th board or the top-20 percentile of the respective board was considered eligible for admission in IIT.
