Pune: Watching videos on web, cook steals from safe

PUNE: A 24-year-old man bought an iron safe online, practised for days the ways to open and close it by watching videos on the web and stole Rs22 lakh over six months from a similar locker of a labour contractor (65), who had hired him as a cook at his Salisbury Park flat.
“No one in the flat in the Salisbury Park housing society realised that the man was stealing cash in small amounts since March,” said assistant inspector Prashant Sande from the Swargate police on Friday.
The police on Thursday booked the cook from Sukhsagarnagar in Katraj, having his roots in Rajasthan. Sande said the man was hired as a full-time cook at the labour contractor’s house two years ago. “He soon became friendly with his family members and won their confidence. He knew that the complainant and his son, also a labour contractor, used to keep cash in a safe inside a cupboard,” the officer said.
“Such a safe can be opened in three modes – digital, numeric and manual. The cook checked the operation of the safe on a popular video sharing website. He then purchased an iron safe from an online platform. For days, he practised the theft on his safe. One he got the hang of it, he started stealing money from his employer’s safe in small amounts,” Sande said.
“Since March, he has stolen Rs22 lakh from the safe. He recently took leave from work for a few days on the pretext of meeting his ailing wife in Nagora district, Rajasthan. He did not report for duty after that. The theft came to light after the complainant recently opened the safe to deposit money in the bank. He found the money stolen. The complainant said he suspected the cook, because his family members did not touch the safe,” the officer said.
“He called the cook over the phone and told him to meet him. The cook said he was in Rajasthan. The complainant’s suspicion grew stronger on learning that the man was in Pune and not Rajasthan. The contractor told the police that the cook used to wear a gold chain, bracelet and five gold rings and was using a high-end cellphone,” Sande said.
Senior inspector Ashok Indalkar from the Swargate police said, “The man got admitted to a private hospital on the ground that he is suffering from severe stress. Hence he could not be arrested. In a statement, the cook told the police that he had memorised the digital and numeric numbers of the safe used by his employers.”
The officer said, “He had also prepared a duplicate key for manually opening the safe. The man admitted that he had practised the theft on the safe he had purchased online.”
