SpiceJet responds to DGCA show cause notice; ‘appropriate decision shortly’

NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has received cash-strapped SpiceJet’s response to the show cause notice it had issued to the budget carrier on July 5, 2022. “We have received a response from the airline. We are examining (the same) and shall take (an) appropriate decision shortly,” a senior DGCA official said on Tuesday.
Following a spurt in incidents in recent months, the regulator had issued a show cause to SpiceJet for failing “to establish safe, efficient and reliable air services.” The airline had to respond by Tuesday (July 26), explaining why action should not be taken against it.
Once under regulatory scanner of strict checks, incidence of snags on SpiceJet flights have reduced in past few weeks. On Monday, the government had said in a Parliamentary reply that the regulator had conducted 53 spot checks on 48 aircraft of SpiceJet between July 9 and July 13 and it did not find any major safety violations. Union minister of state for aviation V K Singh had said Monday: “However as a safety measure, DGCA ordered SpiceJet to use certain identified aircraft (10) for operations only after confirming to the regulator that all reported defects/malfunctions are rectified.”
In a statement issued Tuesday, SpiceJet said it had “rectified the defects/malfunctions identified in 10 planes by the DGCA and all these 10 aircraft are back in operation. The rectification was done immediately after DGCA observation. The (aviation) ministry (had) further informed Parliament that DGCA had carried out regulatory audit of three schedule airlines including SpiceJet as per Annual Surveillance Programme-2022.”
SpiceJet CMD Ajay Singh said: “I am happy that the findings of the various checks carried out by the DGCA on our fleet have been made public by the government. SpiceJet has been running a safe airline for 17 years and this is (our) vindication… SpiceJet (has been) flying with highest loads for the past seven years. I am glad that these findings and assessment are of none other than the DGCA, India’s aviation safety regulator.”
